What First-Time Homebuyer Programs Are Available in Minnesota and Dakota County?

My Short Answer

Minnesota first-time buyers have real help available. Minnesota Housing offers first-time homebuyer loans and down payment assistance through participating lenders, and Dakota County buyers may also qualify for local programs through the Dakota County Community Development Agency (CDA). Income and price limits apply and the programs change often, so the first step is a conversation with a lender who actually works with these programs.

Many of my first-time buyers in Lakeville, Apple Valley, Farmington, and Rosemount assume they need 20% down. Most don't. Between conventional low-down-payment loans, FHA, and state and county assistance, a lot of people can buy sooner than they think.

Minnesota Housing programs

Minnesota Housing works through approved lenders to offer first-time homebuyer mortgages and down payment and closing cost assistance. Program names, amounts, and limits are updated regularly, so always check the current details at mnhousing.gov or with a participating lender.

Dakota County CDA

The Dakota County Community Development Agency offers homebuyer education and has offered assistance for buyers in the county. Taking a homebuyer education class is often required for assistance programs, and honestly, it's worth doing either way.

Who usually qualifies

"First-time buyer" often means you haven't owned a home in the past three years, so even past owners can sometimes qualify. Most programs have household income limits and purchase price limits. A lender can tell you in one conversation where you stand.

How I help

I connect buyers with local lenders who use these programs every day, then I help you shop for homes that fit the program's rules. Some assistance has timing or inspection requirements, and I make sure your offer is written to work with them.

If you're renting in the South Metro and wondering whether you can buy, let's talk. I'll introduce you to a lender who knows these programs, and you'll leave with a real number instead of a guess.
